NEW SOUTH WALES — Wildlife officials captured a freshwater crocodile this week after it was discovered swimming several hundred miles south of its typical habitat range.
The animal was located in waters where freshwater crocodiles are not normally found. Officials from the Australian Reptile Park confirmed the capture and described the crocodile as healthy.
How the animal traveled such a distance remains unknown. Freshwater crocodiles generally inhabit northern regions of Australia and are not known to migrate this far south.
Residents in the area reported surprise at the discovery. Authorities relocated the crocodile to the Australian Reptile Park for monitoring.
Officials noted that while unusual animal movements occasionally occur, this distance exceeds expected patterns.
The crocodile has not provided further details.
