Dump Truck Sent to Repair Sinkhole Falls Into Sinkhole in New Jersey

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. — A dump truck delivering asphalt to repair a sinkhole instead fell into the sinkhole, prompting a local emergency declaration by town officials.

The vehicle was transporting materials intended to fill the roadway collapse when the ground gave way beneath it. The truck became lodged inside the hole it had been dispatched to repair.

Officials said the incident also ruptured a water main located below the roadway, delaying repair work until the vehicle could be removed.

Crews worked to extract the truck before addressing the damaged infrastructure. The road remains closed as repairs continue.

Town officials confirmed that additional stabilization measures are being evaluated before further equipment is sent into the area.

The sinkhole remains under active management.
